Countdown to People's Inquiry - final stretch

Media Release  Jan 2006

The Convenor of the People's Inquiry said today that it was not too late to get written testimony in to the Steering Committee for the March Inquiry.  The deadline has been extended to early March after a number of calls from people registered to give evidence who had been unable to get their testimony in on time.

Hana Blackmore said that many people were finding it very difficult to re-visit painful memories.

"For some people this is the hardest part.  It takes huge courage to put down on paper experiences you would rather forget."

She said the Steering Committee appreciated the challenges people faced and would do everything to accommodate them.

"Unlike other inquiries where submissions are summarised by a committee, our commissioners will read all the testimony.  This means we need to process them and get them to the commissioners before the Inquiry - and this takes time".

Hana emphasised that the Steering Committee were there to help, and said they would appreciate contact if anyone was going to be late with their submission or needed help to record their testimony.
